Death To Self Skull and Dagger Pendant - The Meaning Behind

Death to Self: The Surrender That Leads to Life

The world tells us to follow every desire, protect our pride, and place ourselves at the center of our story.

Jesus invites us onto a different path.

It is a path of surrender—one that requires us to release our need for control, lay down the patterns that keep us bound, and allow Christ to reshape who we are.

“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”
— Galatians 2:20

This is the meaning of death to self.

It is not the destruction of our worth or identity. It is the surrender of the old self so that we can discover our true identity in Christ. It is allowing the parts of us ruled by pride, selfishness, fear, and sin to die so that something new can live in their place.

The Battle Within

Some of the greatest battles we face are not around us. They are within us.

They are fought between what we want in the moment and what we know God is calling us toward. Between the comfort of familiar patterns and the freedom found in obedience. Between protecting our pride and admitting that we need grace.

Jesus did not hide the cost of following Him.

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
— Luke 9:23

He did not describe surrender as a one-time decision. He said we must take up our cross daily.

Every day presents another opportunity to choose His way over our own—to forgive when we would rather remain bitter, to tell the truth when hiding feels easier, to resist what once controlled us, and to trust God when we cannot see where He is leading.

Death to self happens through these quiet, daily acts of obedience.

What the Skull Represents

The skull reminds us of our mortality.

Our lives on this earth are temporary. Our possessions, accomplishments, appearances, and reputations will eventually pass away. Remembering this is not meant to make us hopeless. It is meant to help us live wisely.

When we remember that our time is limited, we begin to ask better questions.

What am I living for?
What has control of my heart?
What kind of person am I becoming?
What will remain when this life is over?

The skull confronts the illusion that we have endless time to become the people God has called us to be. It reminds us not to waste our lives chasing things that cannot satisfy or allowing old wounds and destructive habits to determine our future.

Our days are numbered, but in Christ, they can be filled with eternal purpose.

What the Dagger Represents

The dagger symbolizes the decisive act of putting the old self to death.

This is not a symbol of physical harm. It represents spiritual surrender: cutting away the pride, selfishness, addictions, resentments, and destructive desires that separate us from the life God desires for us.

True surrender is rarely passive. There are times when we must make a firm decision to walk away from what is harming us, even when part of us still wants to hold on.

We may need to remove an influence, confess a hidden struggle, ask for help, establish a boundary, or finally release something we have tried to control for too long.

The dagger reminds us that following Christ requires intention. We cannot continue feeding the old life while asking God to make us new.

Some things must be laid down so that better things can rise.

Surrender Is Not Self-Hatred

Dying to self does not mean believing that you are worthless.

You were created in the image of God. You are known, loved, and valued by Him. Jesus did not give His life because yours had no worth. He gave His life because His love for you is beyond measure.

Death to self means surrendering the false identity built around sin, ego, shame, and self-reliance. It means letting go of the person the world told you to become so that Christ can restore the person God created you to be.

God is not asking you to disappear. He is inviting you to be transformed.

As the old self loses its grip, the character of Christ begins to grow within us. Pride gives way to humility. Bitterness gives way to forgiveness. Fear gives way to trust. Bondage gives way to freedom.

We do not become less alive when we surrender to Christ. We become truly alive.

The Freedom of Letting Go

We often think freedom means being able to do whatever we want. But if our desires are ruled by addiction, anger, approval, greed, or fear, following them does not make us free. It only strengthens what holds us captive.

Jesus offers another kind of freedom.

It is the freedom of no longer being controlled by what once defined us. The freedom to admit we were wrong. The freedom to begin again. The freedom to live for something greater than ourselves.

Surrender can feel like losing, especially at first. But whatever Christ asks us to lay down, He replaces with something better.

We surrender shame and receive grace.
We surrender control and learn to trust.
We surrender our old identity and receive new life.
We surrender ourselves and find that Christ has been offering freedom all along.

Why We Created the Death to Self Pendant

We created the Forged By Fire Death to Self Skull & Dagger Pendant as an emblem of the battle within—and the transformation that becomes possible through surrender.

The skull reminds us that this life is temporary and that what we choose to live for matters. The dagger represents the deliberate decision to put the old ways to death. Together, they tell a story that does not end in death, but in resurrection and new life.

This pendant may represent a destructive pattern you have left behind, a battle you are still fighting, or a daily commitment to follow Jesus no matter the cost. It is a reminder that your past does not have to remain your identity and that the things which once controlled you do not have to determine your future.

In Christ, the old can pass away. The broken can be restored. The captive can become free.

The Christian life is not about adding Jesus to the life we have already built. It is about placing our entire lives in His hands and trusting Him to make us new.

Death to pride. Death to the old ways. Death to what once controlled you.

Die to self. Live for Christ.
